Wheel Arch Flares Guide: Ranger, Raptor, Hilux, Navara and Amarok

Next Gen Ford Ranger Raptor OEM-style wheel arch flares

Wheel arch flares (also called fender flares) are one of the most popular ute upgrades in Australia. They give the truck a wider, tougher stance, cover wider wheels and tyres, and protect the paint from stones and mud thrown up by the tyres. This guide covers what to look for and which flares suit the Ford Ranger, Next Gen Ranger and Raptor, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton and Volkswagen Amarok.

Why fit wheel arch flares?

  • Looks: flares fill out the guards and make the ute look wider and more planted.
  • Wider wheels and tyres: if your tyres sit further out after a wheel upgrade, flares help keep them covered.
  • Paint protection: the flare takes the hit from gravel and debris instead of the paint on the guard.

OEM style, slim, rugged or wide?

  • OEM style: a factory-look profile that follows the original lines of the guard. A good choice if you want a clean, subtle upgrade.
  • Slim: a low-profile flare that adds definition without much extra width.
  • Rugged or pocket style: a bolder look with exposed bolt detail, popular on touring and off-road builds.
  • Wide (for example 6 inch): the most aggressive option, made for wider wheel and tyre setups.

Sensor holes: check before you order

Many newer utes, including the PX3 Ranger, Next Gen Ranger Wildtrak and the new Amarok, have parking sensors in the bumper corners near the wheel arches. If your ute has them, choose a flare kit with sensor holes. If it does not, the standard version gives a cleaner look.

Flares by vehicle

Ford Ranger PX1, PX2 and PX3

The PX1 (2011–2015) uses different flares from the PX2 and PX3. For the PX2 and PX3 there are OEM-style, rugged and 6 inch wide kits, including rugged flares with sensor holes for the PX3 and 6 inch wide flares for the PX3. See all Ford Ranger accessories.

Next Gen Ranger and Raptor (2022+)

The Next Gen Ranger has its own body shape, so PX flares will not fit. There are separate kits for the XL, XLS and XLT, the Sport, and the Wildtrak with sensor holes. Raptor owners can choose the Next Gen Raptor OEM-style flares (50mm wide). See all Next Gen Ranger accessories.

Toyota Hilux N70 and N80

Hilux flares are split by generation and facelift: N70 (2005–2011 and 2011–2015), N80 (2015–2020) and the N80 facelift (2021 onwards). The TRD-style matte black flares for the SR and SR5 are a popular factory-look choice. See all Toyota Hilux accessories.

Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton and VW Amarok

We carry slim, OEM-style and rugged kits for the Navara (2021 and 2022 onwards), slim flares for the Triton MR (2019–2022) and OEM flares for the new Triton (2024+), plus several kits for the Amarok 2010–2020 and the new Amarok (2024+) with or without sensor holes.

Fitting

Most flare kits bolt or clip on using the factory mounting points, and some kits need small holes drilled. A careful home mechanic can fit them with basic tools in a few hours. If you would rather have it done for you, we fit flares at our workshop in Prestons, south-west Sydney. See fitting and installation.
