A snorkel is one of the most recognisable 4WD accessories in Australia. But what does it actually do, and do you need one?
What a snorkel does
Your engine breathes through an air intake that usually sits low in the engine bay. A snorkel moves that intake up to roof height. That means:
- Cleaner air on dusty roads. The air up high carries less dust, so your air filter lasts longer.
- Less risk on water crossings. A higher intake makes it less likely water reaches the intake. A snorkel does not make your vehicle waterproof, so always check depth and follow your vehicle's wading limits.
Types of snorkels
Stainless steel
Satin black stainless steel snorkels are strong and give a modern look. Short-entry versions suit newer utes like the Next Gen Ranger, D-MAX and BT-50.
LLDPE (polyethylene)
The classic moulded plastic snorkel. It is UV-resistant, lighter and usually cheaper.
Fitting a snorkel
Most snorkels need a hole cut in the guard using a template, so fitting takes some care. If you would rather not cut your own guard, we can fit it for you at our Prestons workshop.
Shop snorkels by vehicle
We stock snorkels for the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, LandCruiser and Prado, Mitsubishi Triton, Isuzu D-MAX, Nissan Navara, Mazda BT-50, VW Amarok and Suzuki Jimny. Browse all snorkels.
